OVERVIEW

Geographically, Gunsan is divided into two; Gunsan City and the Gogunsan Islands. "Gunsan" in the word Gogunsan means a group of mountains. While "Go" in front of the words means former.

In short, it can be said to be the former Gunsan. So, historically, the naval base was initially located in this area before changing its location to the city of Gunsan.

This unravels the reason why Gogunsan is said to be the former Gunsan. I personally really like Gogunsan. Most probably because I came from Malaysia, and we have several beautiful islands. It makes me feel as if I'm connected.

HOW TO GO

From Gunsan city simply take public buses. It is affordable and comfortable too!

Time taken: 1 hour 27 minutes

Cost: 1,350 Korean won.

1. From Gunsan City, take bus number 97 in front of 이성당 Lee Sungdang Bakery.

2. Get off at 비응항 Bienghang after 35 minutes.

3. Cross the road, there's Gogunsan bus stop. Take bus number 99.

4. Since it is a double decker bus, choose the most front seat on the second floor or a better view. Get off at 선유도해숙용장 Seonyudo Beach after 40 minutes.

WHAT TO DO

#1 Seonyudo Yuramseom Ferry Tour 선유도유람선

Gogunsan is blessed with almost 63 islands or islets. Thus, the most convenient way to see the archipelago is by ferry ride. The course took about 1 hour 20 mins and cost 18,000 won for adults.

The ferry has two-floor. The first floor is for indoor seat while the second floor has outdoor seat. Probably the best option :)

Tips: bring prawn crackers to feed seagulls.

Also along the trip, the captain explained some facts about Gogunsan as well as announced some points of attraction. A lot of unique rocks formation seen throughout the sailing. Such as a cave, mermaid lighthouse, a rock-shaped gate, human-faced rocky island, and many more.

#2 Seonyudo Beach

Seonyudo is one of the islands in the Gogunsan Islands. It is a public beach that is often being the choice of families who comes on holiday to Gunsan. This is due to the shape of the coastline that is relatively flat with the beautiful mountain views and easy to reach.

During public holidays, this beach can get crowded. Most families came for camping, barbecue, and even playing near the beach with their kids.

#3 Seonyu Sky SUN Line (Seonyudo-do Zipline)

This is one of the attractions in Gogunsan. Unfortunately, I went on the weekend so the queue was too long and due to the limited time as we're rushing for the ferry tour, I could not experience Seonyudo Zip-line. I only can imagine, zip-lining over the seawater along the beach. It must be so thrilled with such an amazing view! Also, I recommend, after the zip-lining experience, we can walk towards a red lighthouse that looks like praying hands and walking around the park.

A few tips, if you are on tight budget or you don’t plan to try the zip-line, you can still go to the observatory deck on same building to view Gogunsan island from the 10th floor. The view from up there is quite beautiful, I'm pretty sure.

Cost: Zip-line Adults 20,000 Korean won

Observatory Deck 2,000 Korean won

I highly recommend you to visit Gunsan especially tourists from Malaysia. Some cities in Korea like Jeonju are very famous among foreign tourists or ex-pats. Gunsan should be included in your list as well. I'd recommend you combine these two cities for 3 days 2-night trip! You are going to have meaningful travel moments with your family or friends.
